Nevermore

Posted by Cheryl R. on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, In : Releases
Legend's Ghost is working on a new album titled Nevermore! With a name like that, it shouldn't take too much imagination to guess what the theme is!
Edgar Allan Poe has long been considered an important part of the canon of all things unsettling, mysterious, and gothic. As an artist who spent a lot of the early 2010s immersed in the goth/metal scene in Ecuador, I thought it would be cool to set some of his works to music. As I continued to work on these pieces, I started wondering what slightl...

The Place Between Worlds

Posted by Cherelle-Renee on Friday, May 6, 2022, In : Releases
It's been three quarters of a decade since Legend's Ghost released a new track. It's not that I haven't been artistically active in that time, or even that I haven't done anything with Legend's Ghost. I've acted, performed with various groups, been involved in various projects. And now, I finally get to say I'm releasing a Legend's Ghost track again!

Last fall, I started writing a musical called In Celebration of the Mysterious. I had hoped to perform it in early 2022, but called it off due to...

Dream Within a Dream

Posted by Cheryl R. on Saturday, March 18, 2017,
Edgar Allan Poe fans, I've got something new just for you! Check out Legend's Ghost's new song Dream Within a Dream! When I wrote this song a few years ago, I intended it include orchestral instruments, but I later came to feel that an a cappella arrangement with a storm in the background better captured the mood of the text. I might still record the original idea someday, though!
And of course, many special thanks to Matthew Kizer for recording and mixing this for me!

Posted by Cherelle-Renee on Sunday, February 7, 2016,
I am very happy to be able to say that Legend's Ghost has nearly all the musicians needed to perform live in Minnesota. I've met with 3 talented musicians and the four of us are trying to put something together. However, we're still missing a crucial piece: a bassist!
So if you are a bassist, live in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota and have high technical proficiency, a love of playing live and creating something cool with other musicians, and a professional attitude and are at least 18*, I ...

The Stupidest Thing You've Done For Love

Posted by Cherelle-Renee on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, In : Contests
Legend's Ghost is about stories, and what better story than a love story?
But of course, I don't want anyone to feel left out. As someone who has spent a grand total of one Valentine's Day in a relationship, and that evening was spent volunteering at a crisis center since my partner and I weren't actually on the same continent that day, I can relate to people who get sick of hearing all the gory details of the perfectly magical evenings their roommates/cousins/siblings/co-workers/hairdressers ...

Very excited to announce that the Gatekeepers album is now ready and can be bought in the Legend's Ghost website store or at legendsghost.bandcamp.com/releases!

Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore"

Posted by Cherelle-Renée on Wednesday, September 3, 2014,
As some of you who follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Reverbnation may be aware, I'm recording a musical version of Edgar Allen Poe's poem "The Raven." Unlike previous Legend's Ghost recordings, this one will use only real instruments and no VSTs.

I didn't want just another spooky piece with an organ. Much as I love organs, I didn't think I needed to channel my inner 1930s radio theater director and summon the spookiness with the perfectly placed but now cliché C minor organ chord. I decided...

Chilean Singer Pamo to perform on upcoming album

Posted by Cherelle-Renée on Thursday, August 21, 2014,
I am excited to announce that the Chilean singer Pamo will be performing on the Gatekeepers album, singing the role of The Mother. I received Pamo's vocal tracks earlier today, and I am really impressed with the passion and emotion she displays while performing an admittedly challenging and complex role.
All that remains to be done now for this album is to add in a few small backing vocal parts and then go to the studio to mix the two tracks Pamo appears on. Then, it will be all ready for you ...

I owe you an explanation

Posted by Cherelle-Renee on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, In : Releases
I realize it seems like I announced the release of a long-awaited album, then disappeared off the face of the earth. And in a way, that is precisely what I did.
But during this off-the-face-of-the-earth time, I haven't been sitting here twiddling my thumbs and laughing maniacally about how I fooled you all into thinking I'd made a CD, believe it or not.
Shortly after I announced the release, a trusted friend of mine pointed out a fairly significant technical error. After listening to the track ...

Release postponed

Posted by Cheryl R. on Friday, March 7, 2014, In : Releases
Sometimes, making a CD feels a bit like an epic battle of wits between me and Murphy's Law. And nothing makes me feel more sheepish than announcing a release date only to retract it 2 days before said release date.
Last week, I wanted to show my family how the CD sounded so far. While I was doing that, I somehow managed to trip over the cable connecting the hard drive with all my data on it to the computer, knocking the hard drive onto the floor. Unfortunately, that damaged the hard drive to t...

And now for something completely unrelated to music...

Posted by Cherelle on Saturday, December 7, 2013,
Awhile back, I decided I wanted to give voice acting a try, so I auditioned for and was cast in the web series Ian Something by Danish animator/director Jens Kragelund. I play Ulrikke, the main character's girlfriend, and also, the TV hostess.
Of course, the first thing a person does when researching a new role is learning how to pronounce your character's name. Easier said than done when your character is Danish and you don't speak a word of the language.
Then, after trying to figure out your...

Posted by Cherelle on Friday, December 6, 2013, In : Guest Artists
I am pleased to announce that I have received bass tracks for a track which will also feature LadyLau, Sid Barnhoorn, and Helge Kautz.
The mysterious bassist is my college friend and former Prog-nosys bandmate Eric Goerdt, now known as Reverse Flow. I met Eric while I was a back-up singer with the Fargo-Moorhead, North Dakota band Prog-nosys. The secret died with her

Posted by Cherelle R. on Thursday, October 31, 2013,
Growing up, I heard plenty of stories about my grandmother's mysterious grandmother, Phoebe Windsor Smith. According to the stories, she often disappeared for two or more weeks at a time, then return home and say nothing to her husband except, "Hello, George Smith!" I always wondered where she went and what she did. My imagination always concocted a variety of crazy scenarios: was she a spy for the FBI? Was she having some sort of wild affair with a traveling circus performer? Was she secretl...

Jilly Comrie and Daniel Junglas to appear on Gatekeepers album

Posted by Cherelle R. on Saturday, June 15, 2013,

First of all, the pianist/singer-songwriter Jilly Comrie has recorded some piano tracks for the Gatekeepers album. I met Jilly in 2009, and we soon became good friends. Jilly played live with Legend's Ghost in 2011, when we opened for the Chilean band The Fallacy. She was also a winner of the Semifusa competition in Ecuador in 2012.
You can hear Jilly here, in the title track of the album.

A Legend's Ghost Ghost Story

Posted by Cherelle R. on Tuesday, April 23, 2013,
With all the talk of "ghosts of stories never told," I've realized it's just not a proper Ghost site without a good spooky story.
And the one I'm going to tell you is true. It happened to me years ago.

I had heard Clet Hall at Niagara University was haunted, but I decided to move in anyway. While the idea unnerved me, it also fascinated me. I'd grown up hearing stories of other hauntings in my family, so I couldn't help but wonder what it was like. So there I was, this shy, awkward, quirky fres...

Long time, no post, so more news!

Posted by Cherelle-Renée on Monday, May 7, 2012,
So, there's a lot of news here.

First, I would like to announce that I am involved in a new project here in Ecuador. Last August, I was playing a show with Legend's Ghost. There was another gothic band there called Triskel. I thought they looked like interesting people, so I took pictures of them as they performed, and then asked if they wanted to see them. (Probably the oldest stalker trick in the book, but hey. It worked.) To my surprise, they asked me if I wanted to sing with them. I agreed...

As anyone who has me on Facebook knows, Legend's Ghost just made a music video. And was it ever an adventure!
It was something I had wanted to do for a long time, but when Legend's Ghost was asked to open for the Fallacy, I began to feel some pressure to put out a music video already. We were going to have a TV interview, and I was told that the TV station wanted a video to play after the interview. So I did what anyone with a talented director/cinematographer brother would do: I asked him to ...

We opened for The Fallacy!

Posted by Cherelle-Renée on Sunday, June 19, 2011, In : Show Reviews
The end of May saw the opportunity for Legend's Ghost to open for the Chilean band The Fallacy, who were visiting Ecuador for the first time.
Although the turn-out wasn't what I'd hoped, we still had a blast, both on and off the stage. The Fallacy put on a very profession, very high-energy show, complete with background videos. The music, at least Angie's vocal style, reminded me a bit of a slightly more gothic Lacuna Coil, but with their own twist.
Afterwards, we went out for Canelazo (an Ecua...

Mystery Vocalist 6

Posted by Cheryl R. on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, In : Guest Artists
I thought it was about time for another vocalist guessing contest, so head over to the music page, have a listen, and send me your guesses at legendsghost@gmail.com.

As always, here are the clues:

1. The vocalist is singing in his native language.  But I will not tell you what language that is.  It would make it too easy!

Belgian Guitarist Kristof Elst performs on Legend's Ghost

Posted by Cheryl R. on Saturday, March 6, 2010, In : Guest Artists
There is a new song up, and a new guest artist to announce!  That guest artist would be Kristof Elst of the project Dragons and Lilies, formerly of Transentience.

Although I have never met Kristof personally, I became acquainted with his musical style through his former Transentience bandmate (and Legend's Ghost guest soloist) Joop de Rooij.  When he added me on facebook in late 2009 and I needed another guitarist, I was very happy to ask him to play some songs on Legend's Ghost.

You can now ...

Gig Canceled

Posted by Cheryl R. on Friday, February 12, 2010,
It is with a heavy heart that I announce that the Legend's Ghost gig has been canceled.

Doing this show meant more than just about anything to me.  I frantically searched myspace for musicians to share the moment with me.  I went to some rehearsals feeling as if I would faint, because I was trying to recover from an allergic reaction but feared the medications I had for it would make me too tired to rehearse and eventually do the show, or worse, cause damage to my voice.  I canceled other enga...

First Legend's Ghost show at El Pobre Diablo!

Posted by Cheryl R. on Sunday, February 7, 2010,

Tonight, after much freaking out and maniacally searching myspace for musicians to save the day after two people who had said they would play this show dropped out, I finally get to announce this:

Internationally-recorded rock opera project live in concert for the first time! Legend's Ghost deals with themes of ancient mysteries, ghosts of stories never told, and sex as a metaphor for the creative process.

Includes songs from upcoming albums The Suicidal Immortal and Gatekeepers...and a 70s cla...

Jazz/Blues Bassist Sergey Proshunin to play on Legend's Ghost album

Posted by Cheryl R. on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, In : Guest Artists
Today, I get to announce another very talented Legend's Ghost artist: Russian jazz/blues bassist Sergey Proshunin.

In November 2008, I went to a Camaleon Jazz Combo concert. There was this Russian guy onstage playing these crazy bass solos and looking like he was having the time of his life. I thought to myself, "I don't care if he is from a completely different musical background from me, and I don't care if he has never even heard of my style of music.  I've got to have him on my album." Unf...

Petra Struijs to sing on Gatekeepers album

Posted by Cheryl R. on Friday, December 18, 2009,

Dutch singer Petra Struijs, former lead vocalist of the band Galanor, will appear on the Gatekeepers album.  Petra has recently finished recording vocal parts for her role as the Mother.

I first noticed Petra's voice after she was chosen as the lead singer in Galanor.  I could tell right away she had a very strong, versatile voice, and the fact that she was classically trained didn't hurt things either!  I thought she would sound good in one of the roles on Gatekeepers, so I emailed one of her...

Requirements:

- Must be a proficient, talented, and passionate musician

- Must have a way to either record yourself or someone to record you (high quality, of course!) OR live within driving distance of Quito, Ecuador.

- Experience playing symphonic metal is a plus, but if you normally play another genre and are good at lea...

Mystery Singer 5: The Mother

Posted by Cheryl R. on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, In : Guest Artists
And it's now time for another guessing game!  Go to the music page and listen to Mystery Singer 5 and see if you can guess her identity!  As usual, if you are a bandmate, housemate, or romantic partner of this singer, you may not attempt to guess her identity.  (that also goes for other people who are "in the know" for some other reason)

But the rest of you can send your guesses to legendsghost@gmail.com.

A few clues about her:

- She recently left her former band to start an exciting new projec...

New song up!

Posted by Cheryl R. on Friday, October 30, 2009, In : Music
Finally...after exactly a year since the last major LG release, I have a new song up!  This is the first song that has all the required parts done so I can mix it.  Most of the other ones are missing something, so I can't post them yet.  But if you want to have a listen, go to the music page.

The Muse Erotic was originally going to be an instrumental, but I decided to add lyrics.  Because of the nature of the lyrics, I am only showing this song on this website, and not on facebook and myspace....

I have just hooked my laptop up to a beautiful set of speakers, and I have begun editing the final cuts for Gatekeepers!  (Yes, more people still have to record, but that's between me and them! ;) )

I finished the first mix of one of the songs, The Muse Erotic.  I'll be listening to it a lot to decide if it is, indeed, the final version, but I will say I am very excited about how it has turned out, and of course, I...

Joris "Sygmoral" Debonnet and Louise Gracielle to sing on Legend's Ghost

Posted by Cheryl R. on Sunday, October 11, 2009, In : Guest Artists
No one was able to correctly guess either of the mystery singers, so I am now announcing them.

Mystery singer # 3 is none other than Joris Debonnet, the keyboardist and backing vocalist of the recently-signed band Gwyllion.  Joris and I sang together in the 2007 lineup of Ayreonotes, an Arjen Lucassen tribute band which played at the Ayreon fanmeet.  His deep, booming voice immediately caught my attention, and when I began working on Gatekeepers, I knew he would be perfect for the character ...

The Stupidest Thing You've Done For Love

Legend's Ghost is about stories, and what better story than a love story?
But of course, I don't want anyone to feel left out. As someone who has spent a grand total of one Valentine's Day in a relationship, and that evening was spent volunteering at a crisis center since my partner and I weren't actually on the same continent that day, I can relate to people who get sick of hearing all the gory details of the perfectly magical evenings their roommates/cousins/siblings/co-workers/hairdressers ...

I received Pamo's vocal tracks earlier today, and I am really impressed with the passion and emotion she displays while performing an admittedly challenging and complex role.
All that remains to be done now for this album is to add in a few small backing vocal parts and then go to the studio to mix the two tracks Pamo appears on. Then, it will be all ready for you ...

Last week, I wanted to show my family how the CD sounded so far. While I was doing that, I somehow managed to trip over the cable connecting the hard drive with all my data on it to the computer, knocking the hard drive onto the floor. Unfortunately, that damaged the hard drive to t...

Instrumentals all recorded for Gatekeepers!

Posted by Cherelle-Renee on Sunday, February 9, 2014, In : Guest Artists
I get to start yet another post with "I am pleased to announce..."
Or maybe completely thrilled and still not quite able to believe it's real would be a better way to put it.
If you read the title, you probably know why, but if you clicked on it, you probably wanted more details. So I'll humor you. Gladly.
Upon checking my Facebook account yesterday at evening, I came across a message delivering the long-awaited news that the final guitar part had been uploaded for me to download! I have waited ...

Posted by Cherelle R. on Saturday, January 25, 2014,
Work on this song started in 2006...and eight years later, I finally have a finished copy to show you, thanks to the talented sound engineer Stephan Streichhahn. This song was meant to showcase some of the musical themes in The Suicidal Immortal, as well as introduce the story.
The song features LadyLau on vocals, Sid Barnhoorn on guitars, Reverse Flow on bass, and Helge Kautz on drums. Check  out the track "Overture" in the music section. Enjoy!!

Bassist Reverse Flow Performs on The Suicidal Immortal

Posted by Cherelle on Friday, December 6, 2013, In : Guest Artists
I am pleased to announce that I have received bass tracks for a track which will also feature LadyLau, Sid Barnhoorn, and Helge Kautz.
The mysterious bassist is my college friend and former Prog-nosys bandmate Eric Goerdt, now known as Reverse Flow. I met Eric while I was a back-up singer with the Fargo-Moorhead, North Dakota band Prog-nosys. When the band's usual bassist was unable to play an important show, Eric stepped in and learned all of the band's material in about 2 weeks. And we playe...

Ok, not really. But for those of you who've been following me on Facebook and/or Twitter and seen my random space lizard posts, next week , you'll get to see (or more like hear) what that's all about.

In 2008, I was cast as Nopileos the Teladi (in other words, space lizard) in Helge Kautz's space synth metal opera project voXager. VoXager is based on the story of Egosoft's game series X, as well as on Kautz's book series about the same characters. My character is a spunky, adventurous, highly...

Posted by Cherelle R. on Saturday, June 15, 2013,
Two more guest artists have been recorded, and you can now listen to both of them.

Awhile ago, my inner me...

Musician Casting Call!

Recording on Legend's Ghost's album The Suicidal Immortal will resume in March of this year. I am looking for musicians and singers, preferably those who are able to record themselves in their own studio, but talented musicians unable to do so will also be considered. This is a low-budget project, so I am looking for people who are doing this more for the experience than the cash.

Piano recorded!

Posted by Cheryl R. on Friday, June 29, 2012, In : Guest Artists
I am pleased to announce that about 2 weeks ago, 3 of the 4 remaining piano tracks for the Gatekeepers album were recorded!

My good friend, singer-songwriter and pianist Jilly Comrie, and I went to the studio to record the remaining piano parts. We got three of the four of them done, but due to a technical error, had to save the fourth for later. But let me tell you, I think Jilly did a great job!

Jilly and I met in 2009 in Quito, Ecuador. We soon discovered a mutual love of music, and in 2011,...

I agreed...

Filming the music video

Posted by Cherelle-Renée on Monday, July 4, 2011, In : Music Video

In November 2008, I went to a Camaleon Jazz Combo concert. There was this Russian guy onstage playing these crazy bass solos and looking like he was having the time of his life. Posted by Cheryl R. on Saturday, May 23, 2009, In : Guest Artists
I am pleased to announce the appearance of Dutch film composer Siddhartha Barnhoorn on the Legend's Ghost album The Suicidal Immortal. Sid recently recorded guitar tracks for the upcoming Legend's Ghost release, "Overture".  These will be posted as soon as I properly edit the song.

I met Sid on the Ayreon forum. I was immediately interested in his film scores, and soon we were talking on msn. During one of our conversations, I mentioned Legend's Ghost and he asked if he could be a part of it....

Live DVD with Camaleon and Guanaco

Posted by Cheryl R. on Sunday, May 10, 2009,
This isn't exactly Legend's Ghost related, but it is related to me. I just got back from Ambato, Ecuador, doing a live show with Ecuadorian rapper Guanaco and Camaleon, the band I have recently joined. The show was part of an AIDS awareness program.

Like all of our shows, it was a blast. I loved finally having a portable mic for my flute (how am I going to go back now?!), and enough room on the stage to headbang without hitting anyone in the eye. I couldn't quite get used to having a video cam...

New Guest Artists Announced

Posted by Cheryl R. on Sunday, April 26, 2009, In : April Fools

April 1, 2009
I am very pleased to announce two new guest artists for the Legend's Ghost project. Both of these individuals are particularly special to me, and without them, I would never have pursued my dream of creating Legend's Ghost this far. Both are very dear to me, as they are members of my family.

First of all, I would like to announce the participation of my father, Jim Childs. Besides being very helpful in the sound engineering department, Dad is also an incredibly talented kazoo pla...

March 8, 2009

Check out the photo page to have a look!

Despite some glitches, it was a good time. The restaurant was packed, and we enjoyed doing a set of favorites by Queen, The Beatles, and Herbie Hancock, among others.

Up next: Cheryl-Renée will join Sergey and his band, Camaleon, onstage with Ecuadorian hip hop artist Guanaco

That's right! A sympho girl, a jazz band, and a hip hop artist are going...

February 22, 2009

After a successful (and fun!) Valentine's gig at the Quito Restuarant Ra-Q, the restaurant manager said he particularly liked the jazz set with Sergey Proshunin and suggested that Sergey and I do a full show together. Sergey, the restuarant manager and I finalized the details about 20 minutes ago, and we can now announce that Sergey and I will be performing at Ra-Q on Wednesday, March 4 at around 8:30 PM. Hope to see you all there! Ra-Q is located on Avenida Portugal, in the ...

Valentine's Day Shows

Posted by Cheryl R. on Sunday, April 26, 2009, In : Show Reviews

February 15, 2009

Cheryl-Renée spent Valentine's Day with the love of her life: her music! She did three shows, one at an English Fellowship Church dinner and two at Ra-Q, a Quito restaurant. The shows were mostly Broadway and classical numbers, featuring Cheryl's mother, Elaine Childs on piano. The last show at Ra-Q also featured a jazz set with bassist
Sergey Proshunin from the Quito-based band Camaleon. (It was actually one of Sergey's solo gigs that landed Cheryl-Renée the gigs at Cocina...
